FOREST AND CARBON PROJECT

Advice in the management of the carbon footprint of a cocoa plantation in Southern Cameroon.

Situation: Cocoa production, carbon emissions and deforestation.

Context: Cocoa farming leads to deforestation and consequently to the spread of carbon emissions. Faced with the climate change crisis today, there is a need for many companies to reduce their carbon footprint by improving: land use, agricultural practices, and forestry. It is with this in mind that this project was conducted.

Objective: To propose natural climate solutions (NCS) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from a cocoa plantation.

Purpose : To enable companies working in agriculture in Southern Cameroon to ensure the sustainability of forests and cocoa farming.

GENDER AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Adaptation of the most vulnerable social groups to the impacts of climate change in rural areas of Niger.

Photodöfnitive_gender and Climate change.jpg

Situation: Gender, climate change and food insecurity

Context: Women are the most active and the pillars of families in rural areas of developing countries. They provide income to the family through their small commercial activities derived from agriculture, participate in the support of the family both in the private space (matrimonial family) and in the public space (selling agricultural products) and in addition to this they carry out household tasks. As a result, they are among the most vulnerable population groups to climate change. The effects of climate change leading to drought, the progressive disappearance of fertile land, the lack of water, threatening food security in these areas.

Objectives:

  • To provide solutions for adaptation strategies in food crop farming in response to climate change, thus promoting the social inclusion of women, a vulnerable group in promoting sustainable food and agricultural systems.

  • To diversify women's commercial activities in order to improve their lives in rural areas and to combat food insecurity.

Purpose: To improve the socio-economic life of vulnerable populations in the rural area of Niger, particularly women, and to strengthen food security in its regions in order to make progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Advice on greenhouse gas reduction in banana production and sustainability of agricultural systems in the Western region of Uganda.

Photo_Banane_combiné.jpg

Situation: Banana production, climate change and greenhouse gases

Context: Banana production and logistics generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The production of bananas in agricultural plantations using inorganic fertilisers containing nitrogen, transport of products by land, maritime and aviation, and conservation by refrigeration are examples of activities through which GHG emissions are observed.

Objectives:

  • To conduct an inventory of greenhouse gases in banana plantations in Uganda.

  • To develop climate change mitigation strategies in banana farming by suggesting natural solutions to reduce GHG emissions in banana plantations in this geographical area.

  • To propose sustainable agricultural systems in this geographical area.

Purpose: To support all stakeholders in banana crop in Uganda by informing them on the adoption of low carbon measures in the said crop and related ones.

ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH

Advice for improving the reduction of water-related diarrheal diseases and environmental climatic variations in the Far North region of Cameroon: the case of cholera, a diarrheal disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae

Innondation.PNG

Situation: Water resources, climate change, temperature increase, diarrheal diseases.

Context : The increase of temperatures and the mutation of the environment are factors of development and increase of diseases. The recrudescence of diarrheal diseases, mainly cholera in the Far North region of Cameroon, caused by Vibrio cholerae, has become particularly frequent and widespread. This part of Cameroon has a tropical climate with a Sahelian tendency, with a single rainy season of approximately three (3) months: July, August and September. It also has a single dry season of about nine (9) months, which is very harsh. The three months of the rainy season constitute the privileged periods for the manifestation of flood disasters and also represent the periods conducive to cholera epidemics in this zone. This situation, which is constantly on the increase, is favoured by global warming, which leads to an increase of temperatures up to 40°C in this part of Cameroon, which is ideal for the development of pathogens. This leads to loss of human life in terms of infant mortality, mortality of the elderly and vulnerable people, in addition to high economic costs for health and environmental damage.

Objectives :
• To propose adaptation solutions on the sanitary and environmental aspects regarding the problems of climate change in the Far North region of Cameroon.

• To inform stakeholders on the best conditions for the potabilization of water before its consumption in this region.
• To educate stakeholders in this region on the understanding of the environmental factors that contribute to the proliferation and spread of Vibrio cholerae, for an awareness that is essential for the protection of public health in this region.

Purpose: To support stakeholders to combat the impacts of climate change on human health and the environment in the Far North region of Cameroon.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT

Advice on improving biodiversity protection measures in the forest ecosystems and on the sustainable development of trade for local forest riparian communities in western Burundi

Foret_Burundi.PNG

Situation: Environmental protection, ecological trade, sustainable development, riparian forest communities.

Context : The forest is a precious asset for local forest communities in Burundi as they use it for food, health care and develop a commercial activity through the resources they draw from it to provide for their families particularly and their community in general. However, in order to fight against the degradation of the forest ecosystem, to guarantee environmental sustainability through the protection of forest biodiversity, and to promote the commercial activity of these communities, it is important to motivate the populations to practice ecological trade and to learn techniques that assure the conservation of biodiversity in the forest environment, for example, through the domestication of some non-wood forest products and many others.

Objectives :
• To propose measures for the protection and restoration of forest biodiversity in this area.
• To propose strategies for sustainable and environmentally sensitive trade in Western Burundi

Purpose: To promote environmental sustainability and sustainable trade for local people in this forest area.
